More About Mission to Reach
Where We Serve
Mexico is a land of stark contrasts. The ancient beside the modern, opulent
wealth next to abject poverty. Life here is difficult for most people, and
needs abound.
The heritage of Mexico's people harkens back to the Mayan and Aztec cultures thousands of years before Columbus. Yet today industry is the major focus in Mexico.
Wealth is centered in the hands of only a few, and a large gap exists between the rich and the poor.
Government figures show 13.5 million people live in extreme poverty. Another 23.6 million are said to be living at or below the poverty level.
Living conditions are close to subsistence level for the majority of the rural population. The same is true for the urban poor, whose squatter settlements can be seen on the fringes of most larger cities.
Sad Statistics
- Population: 98 million
- Literacy: 87 percent
- Languages: Spanish, Indian
- Religious Background: Most are Catholic, bound in sin and narrow traditionalism. Only one in 10 attend church regularly.
- Spiritual Needs: Second least evangelized nation in Latin America. 50% are under age 20.
So far the situation has been getting worse. Mexico 's fast-growing population
adds more than a million additional job seekers every year! With the devaluation
of the peso in 1994, the poor took an even harder hit. Far too many have
no jobs and no homes. Finding scraps of plastic, tin, and tree limbs, they
build shelters for their families. In the face of these odds, family loyalty
is very strong.
Malnutrition among children runs high. So does the people's need for God's mercy, especially for the redeeming grace of Jesus.
